Attended Syracuse University then graduated from the University of Washington with his M.A. in 1915 and later studied at the University of Chicago and at Yale University. Moved to Kentucky where in 1918 he became an assistant professor of geology at the University of Kentucky and in 1919 he became state geologist with the Kentucky Department of Geology and Forestry. He was appointed director and state geologist of the reorganized Kentucky Geological Survey in 1920 a position he held until 1932. Served as chairman of the Kentucky Park Commission 1924-1928 and as professor of geology and chairman of the department at Transylvania University 1947-1951.
