Biography/History noteRobert Lansing (b. Oct. 17, 1864, Watertown, New York-d. Oct. 30, 1928, New York, New York) was an American lawyer and politician who served as Legal Advisor to the State Department at the outbreak of World War I, and then as Secretary of State under President Woodrow Wilson from 1915 to 1920. He was married to Eleanor Foster Lansing, who was the daughter of Secretary of State John Watson Foster and maternal aunt to Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, Director of Central Intelligence Allen Welsh Dulles, and economist and diplomat Eleanor Lansing Dulles.
