Dr. John was born in Berlin in 1910 and received his Ph.D. from the University of Gottingen in 1933. He came to the United States in 1935 as an assistant professor at the University of Kentucky. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and held the Courant Chair at the Courant Institute from 1976 until he retired in 1981)
