Dictionary of Canadian biography online, viewed 22 November 2017: Jewitt, John Rodgers (armourer, blacksmith, and author; born 21 May 1783 in Boston, England; son of a blacksmith, apprenticed as a blacksmith; engaged by John Salter as armourer for the Boston, which departed from Kingston upon Hull 3 September 1802 and cast anchor in Nootka Sound 12 March 1803; relations with the Nootkas first seemed cordial but deteriorated and the ship was attacked and the crew massacred 22 March; Jewitt was spared on condition that he became the chief's armourer and smith; theoretically a slave but became trusted retainer and was initiated and married a local woman; freed 19 July 1805 by the brig Lydia, with which he sailed before reaching Boston in June 1807; died 7 January 1821 in Hartford, Conn.)
