The globe and mail, 17 June 2000, online, viewed 31 May 2018 (Grant MacEwan, farmer, academic, politician, and author who was the public-relations man for Alberta and served as mayor of Calgary and Alberta Lieutenant-Governor, died Thursday [15 June] at a long-term care facility in Calgary from complications following a fall; born John Grant Walter MacEwan on Aug 12, 1902, on a farm near Brandon, and grew up on a farm near Melfort, Sask.; did not finish high school but enrolled at the Ontario Agricultural College, receiving a bachelor of science degree in agriculture from the affiliated University of Toronto, and a master's degree from Iowa State University; became dean of agriculture at the University of Manitoba; devoted much of his life to politics, standing as a Liberal candidate in a 1951 federal by-election in Brandon, Man., elected to the Alberta Legislature in 1955, becoming Liberal leader in 1958 and losing his seat in 1959, entered civil politics, being elected to Calgary council and becoming mayor in 1963, appointed Lieutenant-Governor in 1965, serving two five-year terms; began writing anecdotal histories of Western Canada in 1948 and produced more than 40 during the next 45 years, which critics complained were shallow and sometimes travelled over ground already covered; dedicated environmentalist; appointed an officer of the Order of Canada in 1974)
