Dictionary of African Biography, accessed February 28, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Park, Mungo; explorer, physician, botanist; born 11 September 1771 in Selkirk, Scotland; studied medicine in the University of Edinburgh; was commissioned to undertake exploration in West Africa on behalf of the African Association (1794); sailed for West Africa on the Endeavour (1795); first European to return safely having observed the west-east course of the River Niger; published acclaimed and much reprinted book of first expedition, Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa (1799); traveled on a second expedition to West Africa (1805); second work was posthumously published, based on surviving papers and reports, as a biographical commemoration of a pioneering explorer (1815); died in 1806, possibly in Mali)
