Wikipedia, March 13, 2019 (Garnet Wolseley, 1st Viscount Wolseley; Field Marshal Garnet Joseph Wolseley; born Golden Bridge House, Dublin, Ireland; Anglo-Irish officer in the British Army 1852-1900; became one of the most admired British generals after successes in Canada, West Africa, and Egypt, followed by a central role in moderning the British Army in promoting efficiency; served in Burma, the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny, China, Canada, and widely through Africa, including Ashanti campaign; on April 1, 1882 appointed Adjutant-General to the Forces, and in August 1882 given command of the British forces in Egypt under Khedive Tewfik to suppress the Urabi Revolt, defeated Urabi Pasha at the Battle of Tel el-Kebir; promoted to rank of general, and raised to the peerage as Baron Wolseley, of Cairo and of Wolseley in the County of Stafford; commanded Nile Expedition in September 1884 for the relief of General Gordon and garrison at Khartoum; in 1890 became Commander-in-Chief, Ireland; promoted to field marshal in 1894; in retirement, after 1900, he was a member of the council of the Union-Castle Steamship Company; died of influenza while wintering in Menton on the French Riviera)
