Sora, Italy, Jan. 12; joined Congregation of Missions, 1807; ord. in Rome 1811; went to U.S., 1816; taught theology St. Thomas Seminary, Bardstown Ky., and rector until 1818 when he est. St. Mary's Seminary at the Barrens, near St. Louis, Mo.; missionary throughout Mo.; superior of Vincentians in U.S., 1820; 2 yrs. later titular bishop of Tenagra and vicar apostolic of newly est. vicariate of Miss. & Ala., but he refused and vicariate supressed; 1824 again appt. bishop of Tenagra and also coadjutor to Bishop Dubourg; appt. bishop of St. Louis, 1827, at same time administrator diocese of New Orleans; built St. Louis Cathedral, dedicated, 1834; apostolic del. to negot. agreement between Haiti and Holy See, 1842; appt. Assistant at the Apostolic Throne the following year; taken ill in Rome, died Sept. 25)
