In Edinburgh in the late 1950s, he founded Britain's first paperback bookshop. In 1962 Haynes was instrumental in founding the Traverse theatre. In the mid-60s, he moved to London, where he created the Arts Lab. In 1969, Haynes moved to Paris to take up a one-year visiting teaching post at the University of Paris VIII.
