Grove music online, July 12, 2019 (Jackson, (John) Calvin; born May 26, 1919, Philadelphia; died Nov. 28, 1985, Encinitas, CA; pianist, composer, and leader; after studying at the Juilliard School (to 1941) he worked as assistant music director at MGM in Hollywood (1943-7); also wrote arrangements for Harry James's orchestra (1943) and recorded with the band of the pianist Phil Moore (1947); in 1948 he moved to New York, where he played with Mildred Bailey at the CafeĢ Society and made his first recording as a leader; in 1950 he settled in Toronto where he played regularly with his quartet at the Park Plaza Hotel and presented a weekly television program for CBC; by 1957 he had returned to the USA and after 1961 he lived in Los Angeles; his compositions include music for films and television)
