Kennedy was born in Mexico in 1912, his parents subsequently moved to Easton, Pennsylvania; He graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering from Lafayette College in Easton in 1932 and accepted an appointment to teach at Alborz College, outside Tehran, Iran, run by the American Presbyterian Mission. Fluent in both spoken and written Farsi, before leaving Iran he co-authored the first Farsi translation of the Boy Scout Handbook. He recieved a PhD in mathematics from Lehigh University (1939); joined the University of Alabama as an Assistant Professor, during which time he began to pursue what would become a life-long interest in medieval Persian and Arabic mathematics and astronomy.
