Biography/History noteWest Berlin was a political enclave which comprised the western part of Berlin during the years of the Cold War (1949-1990). It consisted of the American, British, and French occupation sectors established in 1945. It had close ties with, but was not a constituent part of, the Federal Republic of Germany. It had a special and unique legal status because its administration was formally conducted by the Western Allies.
