From then on, he was affiliated with and lived near the Institution until his death in 1992, although he held faculty positions at Harvard from 1960 to 1963 and MIT from 1963 to 1978, when he rejoined the WHOI staff)

Boston herald viewed through Newsbank, July 18, 2012: obituary dated Thursday, January 23, 1992 (Henry Stommel of Falmouth, a world-famous oceanographer, died Jan 16. following surgery at New England Deaconess Hospital. He was 71. Born in Wilmington, Del., he received a bachelor's degree in astronomy at Yale University in 1942. He taught at Yale for two years before becoming a research associate at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. In 1960, he joined Harvard University as a professor of oceanography, and in 1963 he joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He returned to Woods Hole in 1978 and stayed on as a senior scientist)
