He was 71. Born in Wilmington, Del., he received a bachelor's degree in astronomy at Yale University in 1942. He taught at Yale for two years before becoming a research associate at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. In 1960, he joined Harvard University as a professor of oceanography, and in 1963 he joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
