Biography/History note | William Joel Stone (b. near Richmond, Madison County, Kentucky, May 7, 1848-d. Washington, D.C., April 14, 1918) was a Representative and a Senator from Missouri. He attended the public schools of Richmond, Kentucky and graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1867. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1869, and commenced practice in Bedford, Indiana. He moved to Columbia, Missouri, where he was city attorney for a few months in 1870, and later in the same year moved to Nevada, Missouri where he continued to practice law. Stone was prosecuting attorney of Vernon County, Missouri from 1873-1874. He was elected to the House of Representatives and served from 1885-1890. Stone was Governor of Missouri 1893-1897, and a member of the Democratic National Committee from 1896-1904, serving as vice chairman from 1900-1904. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1902 and served from March 4, 1903, until his death. Stone died in Washington, D.C., April 14, 1918 and is interred in Deepwood Cemetery, Nevada, Vernon County, Missouri. |
