Wikipedia, Nov. 5, 2010 (Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi; born Oct. 2, 1869 in Porbandar; died Jan. 30, 1948 in New Delhi; commonly known as Mahatma Gandhi, he was the preeminent leader of Indian nationalism in British-ruled India. Employing non-violent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for non-violence, civil rights and freedom across the world. He studied law at University College London; he lived Pretoria, South Africa and worked as a legal representative for the Muslim Indian Traders; he returned to India permanently in 1915 and joined the Indian National Congress and in 1920 took over its leadership)
