In 1860 Molise (created 1806 as province of Kingdom of Naples) became Campobasso, province of Kingdom of Italy; in 1963 province declared a region with name Molise; regional admin. did not become effective until 1970; in interim, area cont. as province of Campobasso; in 1970 region of Molise effectively instituted, superseding provincial admin. Region is divided into two provinces: Campobasso and Isernia.
