Biography/History noteOne of the five provinces of the former captaincy-general of Guatemala which declared their independence in 1821 and, in 1823, became the Confederación de Centro América. The former province became a state in 1824. In 1839 it declared its independence of the confederation. In 1847 it was officially proclaimed a republic.
