Moved in 1891 near Clinton in Hickman County. Attended Marvin College 1892 to 1897, then Emory College of Atlanta from 1897 to 1898 until his brief return to teach at Marvin College, then moved to Paducah, Ky. Served in Paducah as a law clerk, then passed the bar in 1901 and opened a law office in 1901. He continued studying law in the summer of 1902 at the University of Virginia School of Law. Successfully ran for county attorney in 1904, then for U.S. House of Representatives, serving from March 4, 1913 to March 3, 1927, then for U.S. Senate from March 4, 1927 to January 19, 1949, and again from January 3, 1955 until his death on April 30, 1956. Served as vice president under Truman January 20, 1949-January 20, 1953. Died on April 30, 1956 in Lexington, Virginia) |
