He attended Willamette University studying journalism, but left to join the U.S. Army during World War I. At the War's conclusion, he decided to pursue a degree in botany which he earned at the University of Oregon (1923). He later earned a M.A. (1926) and Ph.D. (1928) from University of Iowa. In 1925 he married Terressa Cox. Prescott was Associate Professor at Willamette University (1928-1929) and Albion College in Michigan (1929-1946). He went on to become a professor of botany at Michigan State University (then Michigan State College) until his retirement in 1968. His primary research areas in botany were limnology and phycology.
