Schaefer, a medical researcher who carried out studies on carbon dioxide for the Navy, died of a heart attack Saturday [Dec. 26, 1981] at his home in Old Lyme, Conn. He was 69 years old. Dr. Schaefer conducted research on the toxicological effects of increased carbon dioxide concentration on a human being in a closed environment; In 1958, he initiated and organized the first International Symposium on Submarine and Space Medicine, which was held in New London, Conn. Dr. Schaefer came to the United States from his native Germany in 1949 and joined the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory in New London.
