Pitt, who was appointed chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission in 2001 and pressured into resigning 15 months later, died May 30 in Washington. He was 78. Before he got the top job at the SEC, Mr. Pitt was widely regarded as one of the nation's foremost authorities on securities law. Hired as an SEC staff member at age 23, he was promoted seven years later to become the agency's youngest general counsel ever. He subsequently began a lucrative reign during private practice, at the international law firm Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson in Washington. Harvey Lloyd Pitt was born in Brooklyn on Feb. 28, 1945. Mr. Pitt spent the past two decades as chief executive of Kalorama Partners, a Washington-based consulting firm focused on regulatory compliance and corporate governance)
