Studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1823 and established a practice in Harrodsburg. Served as commonwealth's attorney during 1829-1835. Elected twice to the U. S. House of Representative March 4, 1835-March 3, 1839. Became secretary of state in Kentucky in 1840; elected to the Kentucky House in 1845 and attorney general of the commonwealth in 1851. Appointed U.S. district attorney of Kentucky in 1861 by President Lincoln where he served until his death February 18, 1863 in Frankfort, Ky.)
