The state includes the island of Tasmania and the surrounding 334 islands. Tasmania is promoted as the natural state owing to its large and relatively unspoiled natural environment. The state capital and largest city is Hobart, which encompasses the local government areas of City of Hobart, City of Glenorchy, and City of Clarence) July 8, 2018 (Tasmania (abbreviated as Tas and known colloquially as Tassie); island state of Australia; initially part of the Colony of New South Wales but became a separate, self-governing colony under the name Van Diemen's Land in 1825. In 1854 the present Constitution of Tasmania was passed and the following year the colony received permission to change its name to Tasmania; Van Diemen's Land--which thus far had existed as a territory within the colony of New South Wales--was proclaimed a separate colony, with its own judicial establishment and Legislative Council, on 3 December 1825; the colony was renamed Tasmania in 1856)
