Dictionary of African Biography, accessed January 14, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Dhanis, Francis; Baron Dhanis; soldier, colonial founder, official; born 11 March 1862 in London, England; completed military school in 1884; became an official in the Belgian Congo, led offensive against Arab forces and their allies, who resisted Belgian efforts to colonize (1892); gained decisive victory over ally of the Swahili Arabs, Ngongo Lutete (1893); established the rudiments of Free State authority, which would become a system of exploitation provoking international outrage; was made baron in Belgium, feted by King Leopold, and appointed vice governor of the Congo Free State; appointed member of the board of directors of the Compagnie des Chemins de Fer du Congo Supérieur aux Grands Lacs, concession company set up by King Leopold to exploit the Congo basin's wealth (1902); died 13 November 1909 in Brussels, Belgium)
