Thorbecke is best known for heading the commission that drafted the revision of the Constitution of the Netherlands in 1848. He is generally considered a founding father of the modern political system of the Netherlands. Thorbecke began studying classical literature and philosophy in Amsterdam, studies he finished in Leiden in 1820. Later, in 1825 he became professor of Political Science at Ghent University. At Leiden University he worked as a professor of Diplomacy, Modern History, Law and Constitutional History (1831-1850).
