Found in | Kenton, E. Simon Kenton, c1930. Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: page 488 ("Simon Kenton" pioneer settler, born April 3, 1755 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Relocated to Pittsburgh, then explored the Ohio River, founding a rough camp at Maysville, Ky. in spring 1775. He and Thomas Williams are considered the first permanent settlers of Mason County. He then moved to Boonesborough that fall and spent the next few years traveling through Kentucky. Built a station on Lawrence Creek in Mason County in 1784, then operated a store in Washington, near Maysville, Ky. Moved to Ohio in 1789, and also purchased land in Missouri. Fell into debt and was imprisoned in 1820 until December 17, 1821 under the Debtor's Law. Died on April 29, 1836 near Zanesville, Ohio. Kenton County, Kentucky was named for him.) |
