He was a practicing architect and interior designer in Austria before migrating first to France, then on to the United States in 1941. In partnership with his wife Gertrude, he worked in textile design and began executing murals (especially for the Hilton Hotels) in the United States. Beginning in 1960, William Wiesner focused most of his energies on writing and illustrating children's books. He died in 1984)
