Biography/History noteThe society was founded in 1805 as the Medical and Chirurgical Society of London. The society received its charter in 1834 and was entitled the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society of London. A supplemental charter was granted in 1907 which empowered the society to unite with other medical societies of London and to change the name of the society to the Royal Society of Medicine. The following societies united with the Royal Society of Medicine at that time: the Clinical Society of London, the Pathological Society of London, the Dermatological Society of London, the Dermatological Society of Great Britain and Ireland, the Obstetrical Society of London, the British Gynaecological Society, the British Laryngological, Rhinological, Otological Association, the Laryngological Society of London, the Odontological Society of Great Britain; British Electro-Therapeutic Society, the Epidemiological Society of London, the Neurological Society, the Therapeutic Society and the Otological Society of the United Kingdom.
