July 5, 1982) Oxford dictionary of national biography, viewed online May 2, 2013 (Keynes, Sir Geoffrey Langdon (1887-1982), surgeon and literary scholar, was born in Cambridge on 25 March 1887; gained in 1906 an exhibition to Pembroke College, Cambridge (of which he was made an honorary fellow in 1965); after Cambridge he trained at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, where in 1913 he won a Brackenbury scholarship in surgery; in 1921 he joined P. L. Oliver in founding the London blood transfusion service, and in 1922 he issued Blood Transfusion, the first textbook on the subject to be published in Great Britain. In 1928 he was appointed assistant surgeon at Bart's; Keynes gained honorary degrees from Cambridge (LittD, 1965), Oxford (DLitt, 1965), Edinburgh, Birmingham, Sheffield, and Reading. He was elected honorary FBA in 1980. He died at Brinkley, Cambridgeshire, near Newmarket, on 5 July 1982) |
