Special noteTransylvania Seminary, established at Danville, Ky., in 1783, moved to Lexington in 1789. In 1799 it merged with Kentucky Academy (founded in 1794) to form Transylvania University. Bacon College, founded at Georgetown, Ky., in 1836, moved to Harrodsburg in 1850. In 1858 its name was changed to Kentucky University. In 1865 Kentucky University moved to Lexington and merged with Transylvania University to form a single school under the name Kentucky University. In 1908 the name was changed back to Transylvania University; in 1915, to Transylvania College; and in 1970, it was again changed back to Transylvania University.
