Biography/History note | Leland Stanford, California businessman and politician, was born March 9, 1824, grew up in New York State, and moved to California in 1852. He became particularly known as the president of the Central Pacific Railroad Company (from 1861); a governor of California (1861-1863); a Republican U.S. senator (elected 1885); and the co-founder, with his wife Jane Lathrop Stanford, of Stanford University (opened 1891). He died June 21, 1893, in Palo Alto, California. |
