He became particularly known as the president of the Central Pacific Railroad Company (from 1861); a governor of California (1861-1863); a Republican U.S. senator (elected 1885); and the co-founder, with his wife Jane Lathrop Stanford, of Stanford University (opened 1891). He died June 21, 1893, in Palo Alto, California. |
