In 1676 in the place of modern Slov'i︠a︡nsʹk a fortress arose which later was named Tor (Soli︠a︡nyĭ) [no publs. in LC data base]. Near the end of 1784 Tor was renamed Slovensʹk [no publs. in LC data base]. In 1794 the city received its modern name. Soviet authority was established in Slov'i︠a︡nsʹk in Dec. 1917)
