Special note | State of Delaware was permanently settled by Swedes in 1638 when it was named New Sweden [Nya Sverige], conquered by Dutch in 1655, seized by English in 1664. Thereafter, except for a brief Dutch reconquest in 1673, administered as part of New York until 1682, when it was ceded to William Penn. Penn agreed to a separation of Pennsylvania and the Lower Counties [of Pennsylvania] in 1704. The two colonies shared a royal governor until the Revolution |
