The Oxford encyclopedia of the Reformation, 1996 (Hunnius, Aegidius (also Giles Hunnius; 1550-1603), German Lutheran theologian and controversialist representing early Lutheran orthodoxy. Hunnius studied theology at Tübingen (1565-1574). After earning a doctorate in theology, Hunnius taught at the University of Marburg (1576-1592), where he worked energetically to eradicate "crypt-Calvinist" theological tendencies from the region. In 1592, Frederick William of Saxony invited Hunnius to the University of Wittenberg. Hunnius died in Wittenberg in 1602)
