Chen Ruoxi, also Chen Jo-hsi, is the pen name of Chen Xiu-Mei, who also has published in English under the name Lucy Chen. She was born in 1938 in Taipei, Taiwan. In 1957, she entered National Taiwan University, where she majored in English literature. In 1962 Chen Ruoxi went to the United States for further studies in English literature and received her M.A. in 1965. Fired by patriotic zeal, she and her husband left the United States in October of 1966 to repatriate to the PRC. In 1969, Chen Ruoxi was assigned to teach English at the Hydraulic College in Nanjing. After experiencing seven years of the Cultural Revolution, she and her family was granted permission to leave the PRC. In 1979, she accepted a position as a researcher for the Institute of Chinese Studies at the University of California at Berkeley. She is the chief editor of Guangchang, a magazine for Chinese exile literature)
