Dictionary of African Biography, accessed December 9, 2014, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Bakari, Mtoro bin Mwinyi; Mtoro Bakari; educator, consultant, travel writer, author; born c.1869 in Tanzania; left East Africa for Germany and called himself Mtoro Bakari (1900); grew up in a Muslim family and identified himself with Islam and Swahili culture; began to learn Arabic in a Qur'an school, studied higher Islamic sciences; worked as a tax collector (1898); was the main author of the Desturi za Wasuaheli (Swahili Customs) published in Swahili and German (1903); taught Swahili at the School of Oriental Languages (SOL) in Berlin and African languages at the Hamburg Colonial Institute (HCI); took a leading role in a colloquium for missionary students and discussed various aspects of Islam and Christianity with Protestant clerics and missionary students (1905-1906 and 1908-1909); died 14 July 1927)
