African American National Biography, accessed December 12 2014, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Davis, Eddie Lockjaw; born 02 March 1922 in New York, New York, United States; jazz musician, saxophonist; decided drummers and saxophonists had the greatest fame and finest women, the drums being cumbersome, he bought a saxophone; self-taught, he was playing at Monroe's Uptown House eight months later; at his first session as a leader in May 1946, the Savoy record producer Bod Shad named one of the performances Lockjaw, hence his nickname and the subsequent affectionate abbreviations Lock and Jaws; from this period (4 February 1958 to 1 February 1959) came his greatest series of albums, collectively called The Eddie Lockjaw Davis Cookbook; he saw too many musicians growing old and still having to endure long hours and difficult travel to survive; seeking an alternative, he withdrew from performance in June 1963 to act as a booking agent with Shaw Artists Corporation; died 03 November 1986 in Culver City, California, United States)
