Bolʹsh. sov. ėnt︠s︡ikl., 3rd ed: v. 18, p. 7-8 (Nikolaev; founded in 1784 as a fortress, became a city in 1789, and by 1802-03 it was designated a provincial town. From 1802-1861 it was placed under the authority of the military-naval command of the Nikolaevskai︠a︡ gubernii︠a︡. In 1861 the city became part of the Khersonskai︠a︡ gubernii︠a︡ until 1920-22 when it was designated the center of the Nikolaevskai︠a︡ gubernii︠a︡. From 1923 to 1930 it was transferred to the newly established Nikolaevskiĭ okrug. From 1932-37 Nikolaev became a part of the Odesskai︠a︡ oblastʹ. From 1937- it became the central city of the Nikolaevskai︠a︡ oblastʹ)
