Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: page 119 ("Mary Carson Breckinridge" born in Memphis, Tn., spent her childhood in Arkansas, Connecticut, Washington, D.C., and Switzerland. Earned a nursing degree from St. Luke's Hospital in New York City. After the death of two children she devoted the rest of her life to maternal and child health, taking courses at London's british Mothers and Babies Hospital until she became a certified nurse-midwife. Established what was later called the Frontier Nursing Service in 1925 in Hyden, Ky. and the Frontier Graduate School of Midwifery in 1970. Died May 16, 1965 in Hyden, Ky.)
