Part of the present-day Donet︠s︡ʹka oblastʹ once belonged to the Polovet︠s︡ʹka zemli︠a︡. During the 17th-18th centuries some of this territory was encompassed in the Slobidsʹka Ukraïna, while the rest was divided between the Viĭsʹko Zaporizʹke and the Viĭsʹko Donsʹke. By 1708 a part of present-day Donet︠s︡ʹka oblastʹ was included in the Azovsʹka hubernii︠a︡ [no publs. in LC data base], then from 1783 to 1797 it became part of the Katerynoslavsʹke namisnyt︠s︡tvo [no publs. in LC data base]. From 1797 to 1802 this land became part of the Novorossiĭsʹka hubernii︠a︡ [no publs. on LC data base], and from 1802 most of the present-day Donet︠s︡ʹka oblastʹ was included in the Katerynoslavsʹka hubernii︠a︡ [no publs. in LC data base] while a smaller part had been included from 1797 in the Oblastʹ Viĭsʹka Donsʹkoho [Oblastʹ Donskogo Voĭska (R.S.F.S.R.)]. During 1917-1920 this territory was contested between the Red Army and the White Armies. From April to Nov. 1918 it had been occupied by Austro-Hungarian forces. In 1919 the Donet︠s︡ʹka hubernii︠a︡ [no publs. in LC data base] was established which included the present-day territories of both the Donet︠s︡ʹka and Voroshylovhradsʹka [now Luhansʹka] oblasts. During 1925 there were five okruhas formed which were subsequently abolished by 1930. In 1932 the Donet︠s︡ʹka oblastʹ itself was established, and at that time included the territory of present-day Voroshylovhradsʹka [now Luhansʹka] oblastʹ. On 06-03-1939 the Donet︠s︡ʹka oblastʹ was divided into the Stalinsʹka [no publs. in LC data base] and the Voroshylovhradsʹka [since 1961 Donet︠s︡ʹka] oblasts. Donet︠s︡ʹka oblastʹ, 1970: p. 44 (During 1925 the Donet︠s︡ʹka hubernii︠a︡ [no publs. in LC data base] was abolished and in its place were established the Stalinsʹka, Mariupolʹsʹka, Artemivsʹka, and Luhansʹka okruhas [no publs. in LC data base for the Mariupolʹsʹka, Artemivsʹka, and Luhansʹka okruhas]. In June 1932 the Donet︠s︡ʹka oblastʹ was formed, which also included the territory of another former okruha, the Starobilʹsʹka [no publs. in LC data base]. In June 1938 the Donet︠s︡ʹka oblastʹ was divided into the Stalinsʹka and the Voroshylovhradsʹka [since 1961 Luhansʹka] oblasts) Encyc. of Ukraine: v. 1, p. 739 (Donetske oblast (named Staline until 1961). Originally established on 07-02-1932. During the 17th-18th centuries the northern part of this present-day oblast had belonged to the Slobidska Ukraina [no publs. in LC data base], while the eastern part belonged to the Don Cossacks.
