Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: pages 382-383 (James Garrard, born in Stafford County, Virginia. Served in the militia during the American Revolution, rising to the rank of colonel. In 1783, moved to what is now Bourbon County, Ky. where he farmed, opened a lumber mill, became a Baptist preacher and made whiskey. Served as Kentucky's governor June 7, 1796-September 9, 1804. Garrard County, Ky. was formed during the first year of his governorship was named in his honor. Lived on his farm until his death.)
