(Thomas Ravenscroft) preface (ca. 1589-after 1622) introduction ("Our knowledge of Thomas Ravenscroft's life is at best patchy, and certain basic biographical information--such as the place and date of both his birth and death--is either missing or has yet to be securely established." New documents discount a baptism date of June 13, 1592; while his baptismal record is no longer extant, there can be little doubt he was born on Portsea Island, Hampshire, probaby in 1589. He published nothing after 1621. His date of death is variously estimated to be 1630-1635 or even 1640, but there is no evidence for these dates.) |
