In the 12th cent. [after the fall of Kievan Rus] it became part of the Volodymyr-Volynsʹke kni︠a︡zivstvo, and from 1199 the city belonged to the Halyt︠s︡ʹko-Volynsʹke kni︠a︡zivstvo. In the second half of the 14th cent. Vololymyr was seized by Lithuania, and later on by Poland. In 1775 with the third partition of Poland, as part of the West. Volynia lands, Volodymyr was reunited with the Russian Empire and subsequently renamed as Volodymyr-Volynsʹkyĭ. In 1919 the city was again seized by Poland under whose authority it renamed until 1939, when as part of the West Ukraine lands it was reunited with Soviet Ukraine) Encyc. of Ukraine: v. 5, p. 644 (Volodymyr-Volynskyi; city and raion center in Volhynia oblast. First mentioned in chronicles under the year 988 as the fortified trading town of Volodymyr [no publs. in LC data base], and the seat of the Volodymyr-Volynskyi Eparchy. In the 12th century it was the center of a principality and in 1199 it became part of the Principality of Galicia-Volhynia. Frequent attacks by the Tatars brought about its decline. In the late 14th century it came under Lithuanian domination. From 1569 the town belonged to Poland. In 1795 the town was annexed by the Russian Empire. It was then renamed Volodymyr-Volynskyi and served as a county center in the Volhynia gubernia.
