Email from US Army Heritage and Education Center, US Army Military History Institute, July 29, 2009 (Official lineage of the 1st Cavalry Division does not include "1st Air Cavalry"; according to the Center for Military History's Force Structure Branch this is the lineage for the 1st Cavalry Division: constituted 20 August 1921 in the Regular Army as Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division. Activated 13 September 1921 at Fort Bliss, Texas. Reorganized and redesignated 25 March 1949 as Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division (Infantry). Reorganized and redesignated 1 July 1960 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Cavalry Division. Reorganized and redesignated 16 October 2005 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company; regarding the 2nd designation, it just shows that the division was dismounted before World War II and fought as an infantry unit. During the Vietnam War they were also dismounted and fought as infantry who were transported by helicopters--hence 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile))
Vietnam in my rearview, 2021: CIP galley (The 1st Cavalry Division was the only division to serve in Vietnam and win a Presidential Unit Citation, this for the operation in the Ia Drang Valley fought by the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 7th Cavalry in November 1965; Although called Airmobile, the 1/7 Cavalry operated much the same as any other infantry unit)
