Rummel, Jack. African-American social leaders and activists, ©2003: pages 1-4 (Richard Allen, abolitionist, minister and community organizer. Born a slave, he purchased his freedom from Stokeley Sturgis, his master, in Dover, Delaware, in the late 1770s or early 1780s. Returned to Philadelphia in 1786 and in 1794 founded the Bethel Church, the first black church in Philadelphia, for which he served as bishop until his death. Died in 1831 in Philadelphia.)
