NUCMC data from Maine Hist. Soc. for Portland Junior College/University of Maine in Portland collection, 1944-1974 (Portland Junior College was established in 1933 in association with Boston University. Its initial objective was to serve as a two-year community college, in conjunction with academic programs at other four-year universities, namely Boston University. In 1943, academic activities were suspended for the duration of World War II, as the student body shrank dramatically. The college curriculum was restored again in 1946, in addition to a new Pre-College program to accommodate Veterans of the war who had not completed their High School education. The same year, the school's campus was relocated to the old Deering Estates, where the school still remains. In 1957, the Junior College merged with the University of Maine to form the University of Maine in Portland, which later merged with Gorham State College in 1970 to become the University of Maine at Portland-Gorham (renamed "University of Southern Maine" in 1978))
