Dutch Wikipedia, viewed February 21st, 2024: (Lamoral I of Gavere, Count of Egmont (also: Egmond, born November 18th, 1522 in on the castle of Lahamaide in Hainaut, died June 5th, 1568 in Brussels) was a general and statesman in the Seventeen Provinces just before the beginning of the Eighty Years' War (Dutch Revolt). In 1568, at the instigation of Alva, he and the Count of Horne were accused of "treason" and sentenced to death. Both were publicly executed by beheading on the Grand Place of Brussels. Egmont was named a Knight of the Golden Fleece at the Chapter of Utrecht on January 17th, 1546. The city of Zottegem is known as "Egmontstad" (Egmontcity).)
