| Biography/History note | The Millı̂ Eğitim Bakanlığı first existed from April 1945 to December 1952. It was preceded by several other names, starting with the Maarif-i Umumiye Nezareti, founded in 1856. That name changed to the Maarif Vekâleti on May 2, 1923. It then became the Kültür Bakanlığı from about 1935-1939. From about 1939-1945, it became Maarif Vekilliği. From January to April 1945 it became the Maarif Bakanlığı. The Millı̂ Eğitim Bakanlığı then became the Millı̂ Eğitim Vekâleti from December 1952-March 1954. It reverted to Maarif Vekâleti from March 1954 to 1960. The name Millı̂ Eğitim Bakanlığı was resumed in 1960. In 1983, merging with the Gençlik ve Spor Bakanlığı, it became the Millî Eğitim Gençlik ve Spor Bakanlığı. In 1989 the name reverted to Millı̂ Eğitim Bakanlığı. |
