Born in Milwaukee in 1931, Gumina performed and recorded with Harry James, Buddy DeFranco (forming the Buddy DeFranco-Tommy Gumina Quarter), Joe Pass, Art Peppers and others. In 1961, he was named by Stan Kenton to the faculty of Kenton's jazz clinic at Michigan State University. In 1968, Gumina founded the Polytone Amplifier Company.
