Souza with a group of like-minded renegades known as the Progressive Artists' Group he helped found in 1947; moved to London in 1949, and later to New York in 1967; produced some of his most notable works during the 1950s and 1960s; long period of neglect ended following his death in 2002, while visiting Mumbai)
